Communications Leadership

Since 2020, we have led strategic external communications for Alaska Air Cargo's B2B audience. We conduct content-strategy brainstorms, create annual editorial plans, and write and edit communications ranging from email campaigns explaining operational changes to stories highlighting the network, cargo teams and customers. Our work, showcased on the Cargo News blog, is referenced regularly by industry media, raising the profile of Alaska and Hawaiian Air Cargo teams and their customers. Alaska and Hawaiian Air Cargo are the air-freight wing of Alaska Air Group.

Writing: People-Centered Storytelling

Our writing for Alaska Airlines first appeared in the Alaska Beyond inflight magazine in 2013, featuring restaurants in destinations within the network. Since 2019, we've written regularly for teams across Alaska Air Group. A few highlights: 

  • Dozens of blog stories featuring the people and work behind sustainability and other initiatives, as well as stories highlighting company news and partnerships. Stories appear under Alaska Airlines, Alaska Air Cargo and Denise Clifton bylines. Read some of the stories in the Alaska News Hub
  • Multiple magazine features, including stories highlighting Alaska employees who are also active in the military reserve, employees advocating for those with disabilities, and a profile of then-Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.
  • Scripts tailored for the emcees of company events.

Videos: Interview Coaching & Scripting

Since 2022, Denise has been the primary interviewer and coach for dozens of heartfelt videos highlighting Alaska Airlines' Legends and Horizon Air's Pathfinders, the highest honor at each airline. The short documentary-style videos tell the career stories of these honored employees, and Denise's role is to discover the arc and soul of each person's story and prepare them to share it on camera. Legends videos are created for internal company celebrations, but you can watch a short compiled video featuring recent flight attendant Legends. For other projects, we also write video scripts that embrace both the brand message and featured employees' unique experiences.

Website Content Strategy

As the Redbird Group's Content Strategy Leader, partnered with Costco's sustainability team to refine the storytelling strategy and lead the 2025 redesign of the company's Our Sustainability Commitment website. 

Sustainability Report Redesign

Partnered with Costco's sustainability team to reimagine the format for Costco's annual Sustainability Report. Matched the best designer to the project and collaborated with her and the Costco team to change the report orientation from portrait to landscape, add interactive elements and produce a beautiful, reader-friendly PDF. Managed the production of the complex 84-page report. Costco's 2025 Sustainability Report

Project Feast: "Cooking Ubuntu"

Narrative Project Creation & Execution

Project Feast’s mission is to provide training and pathways to enable immigrants and refugees to find sustainable employment in the food industry. We collaborated with Project Feast's founder and staff to create Cooking Ubuntu, a grant-funded website project celebrating the recipes and stories of Project Feast alumni, staff and collaborators.
